Role Overview

This position will serve as a History Unit Intern for the Environmental Services Division of the Indiana Department of Transportation. The Intern will be responsible for a variety of Division projects and support. The objective of the position is to provide a valuable learning experience for the Intern, as well as to assist the agency in completing their assignments and responsibilities. The Intern will report to the History Unit Team Lead.


Salary Statement

The hourly rate for this position is $16.24 for those that do not hold a bachelor’s degree & $17.24 for those that hold a bachelor’s degree or higher by the time the internship starts.

 

Location

This position is located in INDOT’s Central Office, Indianapolis.

 

A Day in the Life:

The essential functions of this role are as follows:

  • Identify and execute one major project related to agency needs and academic area of study
  • Create, develop, and sustain the programmatic efforts for the assigned discipline
  • Analyze data and feedback to provide recommendations 
  • Partner with other relevant stakeholders to promote and enhance the quality of projects
  • Collaborate with State of Indiana agencies to ensure effective implementation of internal and external initiatives
  • Data management for GIS layers related to above-ground historic resources
  • Assist with research and writing related to the in-house preparation of historic property reports and related documents, as needed
  • Conduct records searches for small projects
  • Attend (virtually or in-person) Section 106 consulting party meetings, public hearings, and state historic preservation review board meetings, etc.
  • Assist with above-ground architectural field surveys, as needed
  • Participation in cross-training opportunities within Environmental Services Division

What You'll Need for Success:

  • Must be currently enrolled as an undergraduate or graduate with an accredited post-secondary institution and have completed at least one (1) year of undergraduate education.
  • Working towards a bachelor’s or graduate degree in History, Public History, Historic Preservation or related field
  • Academic work in related field
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to analyze data sets related to discipline 
  • Ability to build relationships, establish credibility, and influence leaders at all levels 
  • Ability to conduct well-informed research
  • Ability to solve complex, critical problems
  • Ability to review and make recommendations on proposed changes to relevant policies and procedures
  • Relevant work experience preferred
  • Basic knowledge of the mission and role of INDOT
  • Basic understanding of state policies, procedures, rules, and regulations
  • Knowledge of state government structure, administrative procedures, and the legislative process
  • Ability to research, draft, and edit data and reports
  • Analytical skills
  • Ability to handle multiple projects
  • Ability to operate computer tools
  • Good research and writing skills
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills suitable for a wide variety of contacts
  • Confidence and ability to learn on the job and adapt quickly to changing circumstances

 

Benefits of Employment with the State of Indiana:

This seasonal position does not offer benefits and is limited to 180 working days in an eleven (11) month continuous period
