The Mission of the San Francisco Department of Public Health (SFDPH) is to protect and promote the health of all San Franciscans. SFDPH strives to achieve its mission through the work of multiple divisions - the San Francisco Health Network, Population Health, Behavioral Health Services, and Administration. The San Francisco Health Network is the City’s only complete system of care and has locations throughout the City, including Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital and Trauma Center, Laguna Honda Hospital and Rehabilitation Center, and over 15 primary care health centers. The Population Health Division (PHD) provides core public health services for the City and County of San Francisco: health protection, health promotion, disease and injury prevention, and disaster preparedness and response. Behavioral Health Services operates in conjunction with SFHN and provides a range of mental health and substance use treatment services.

Job Description



The (3530) Chaplain provides comprehensive spiritual care to patients, their families, and staff across inpatient and outpatient settings at Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital and Trauma Center(ZSFG). This role is responsible for addressing urgent spiritual care needs, coordinating with external clergy, and fostering collaboration with community partners and spiritual care professional organizations. The Chaplain will work closely with healthcare providers and staff to ensure that the spiritual and emotional well-being of patients is supported in alignment with the hospital’s mission to deliver compassionate, patient-centered care. Examples of essential duties of this position include but are not limited to:

  • Provide spiritual care and emotional support to patients, families, and staff in both inpatient and outpatient settings.
  • Respond promptly to urgent and emergent requests for spiritual care.
  • Coordinate with external clergy and spiritual leaders to ensure appropriate support for diverse religious and spiritual needs.
  • Build and maintain partnerships with community organizations and spiritual care professional services.
  • Collaborate effectively with providers, nursing staff, and other healthcare professionals to integrate spiritual care into the overall care plan.
  • Participate in care team meetings and rounds as appropriate to advocate for the spiritual needs of patients and families.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of spiritual care programs and initiatives that support the hospital’s care experience goals.
  • Provide input and recommendations for policies and procedures related to spiritual care services.
  • Offer spiritual care and support to ZSFG staff, particularly during times of stress or crisis.
  • Facilitate educational sessions and workshops on topics such as cultural humility, grief, and spiritual well-being.
  • Maintain accurate and confidential records of all spiritual care interactions.
  • Report on program outcomes and provide feedback to the Care Experience team and Chief Experience Officer (CXO).

The 3530 Chaplain also performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications



Minimum

Qualifications

(Required):

  • Education: Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university, with a minimum of twelve (12) semester units in counseling, psychology, or a related field; AND

  • Experience: Two (2) years of Chaplain experience with primary responsibilities including providing spiritual care services and overseeing, monitoring, or coordinating a program providing spiritual care services.

One-year fulltime employment is equivalent to 2,000 hours (2,000 hours of qualifying work experience is based on a 40-hour work week).
